Ingredients

Scale

Main Ingredients

  • 4 thick slices of sturdy bread (brioche or challah recommended)
  • 2 large eggs
  • 1/2 cup milk
  • 1/2 teaspoon cinnamon
  • 1 teaspoon vanilla extract
  • 1 cup finely chopped nut mix (almonds, pecans, walnuts)
  • Butter or non-stick spray (for greasing the air fryer basket)

Optional Sweeteners & Toppings

  • Maple syrup, honey, or powdered sugar (for serving)
  • Fresh berries (optional garnish)

Instructions

  1. Prepare the Custard Mixture: In a bowl, whisk together 2 large eggs, 1/2 cup milk, 1/2 teaspoon cinnamon, and 1 teaspoon vanilla extract until smooth. This mixture will soak into the bread, giving it the classic French toast flavor and custardy texture.
  2. Chop and Prep the Nuts: Finely chop your choice of nuts (almonds, pecans, walnuts) and spread them evenly on a plate. This crunchy coating will adhere to the soaked bread slices.
  3. Soak the Bread: Dip each slice of bread into the custard mixture, allowing it to soak but not become soggy. The bread should be fully coated to absorb flavor without falling apart.
  4. Coat with Nuts: Press each soaked bread slice firmly into the chopped nuts, coating both sides evenly to ensure every bite has a satisfying crunch.
  5. Preheat and Grease the Air Fryer: Preheat your air fryer to 375°F (190°C). Lightly grease the air fryer basket with butter or non-stick spray to prevent sticking.
  6. Air Fry the French Toast: Place the nut-coated bread slices in a single layer inside the basket. Air fry for 8–10 minutes, flipping halfway through, until golden brown and crispy.

Notes

  • Use day-old bread for better custard absorption without falling apart.
  • Do not overcrowd the air fryer basket; give each slice space for even cooking.
  • Keep nuts finely chopped for better adherence and consistent texture.
  • Adjust cooking time based on your air fryer model to avoid burning.
  • Let the French toast cool slightly after cooking to allow the crunch to set before serving.
