Ingredients

Scale

Main Ingredients

  • 10 oz fresh cremini or button mushrooms, cleaned and sliced
  • 2 tbsp unsalted butter
  • 1 tbsp olive oil
  • 3 cloves garlic, freshly minced
  • 2 tbsp fresh parsley or thyme, chopped
  • Salt, to taste
  • Black pepper, to taste

Optional Variations

  • Red pepper flakes or cayenne pepper, for a spicy kick (optional)
  • Grated Parmesan or Gruyère cheese, for cheesy twist (optional)
  • Alternative herbs like rosemary, oregano, or basil (optional)
  • Plant-based margarine or extra olive oil for vegan version (optional)
  • Toasted pine nuts or walnuts for added crunch (optional)

Instructions

  1. Prepare the Mushrooms: Gently clean your mushrooms using a damp cloth or soft brush to remove any dirt. Slice them into halves or quarters depending on size to ensure even cooking and maximum flavor absorption.
  2. Heat the Pan: Warm a large skillet over medium heat and add the butter and olive oil. This combination helps the butter brown without burning while coating the mushrooms evenly.
  3. Sauté the Mushrooms: Add the mushrooms to the hot skillet in a single layer. Cook undisturbed for a few minutes until they develop a golden-brown sear, then stir occasionally to cook all sides beautifully.
  4. Add Garlic and Seasoning: Once the mushrooms are browned, stir in the freshly minced garlic, salt, and black pepper. Cook just until fragrant, about 1 to 2 minutes, to avoid burning the garlic.
  5. Finish with Butter and Herbs: Lower the heat and add a knob of butter along with chopped fresh herbs. Toss everything gently to blend flavors and give the mushrooms their signature glossy coating.

Notes

  • Allow mushrooms to reach room temperature before cooking to ensure better browning.
  • Do not overcrowd the pan; cook in batches or use a larger pan to avoid steaming and achieve a golden crust.
  • Use fresh garlic rather than pre-minced to enhance flavor and cook quicker.
  • Use good-quality unsalted butter for richer taste.
  • Add fresh herbs at the end of cooking for a bright flavor and vibrant color.
