Ingredients

Scale

Base Ingredients

  • 4045 Saltine Crackers (enough to cover a baking sheet in a single layer)
  • 1 cup (2 sticks) Unsalted Butter
  • 1 cup Brown Sugar, packed

Topping

  • 1 to 1 1/2 cups Chocolate Chips (semi-sweet, milk, dark, or white chocolate)
  • Sea Salt, for sprinkling (optional)

Optional Variations

  • Chopped Pecans or Almonds (for nutty crunch)
  • Festive Sprinkles or Crushed Candy Canes (for holiday flair)
  • Cayenne Pepper (a pinch for a spicy kick)
  • Gluten-Free Crackers (as a substitute for saltines)

Instructions

  1. Prepare Your Baking Sheet: Line a baking sheet with parchment paper or a silicone baking mat. Arrange saltine crackers in a single, tight layer covering the entire surface without gaps.
  2. Make the Toffee Base: In a medium saucepan, melt unsalted butter over medium heat. Stir in brown sugar and bring the mixture to a gentle boil. Let it boil for 3-4 minutes, stirring frequently until it thickens and bubbles evenly.
  3. Pour Toffee Over Crackers: Immediately pour the hot toffee evenly over the arranged saltine crackers. Use a spatula to spread and coat all crackers thoroughly.
  4. Bake the Base: Place the baking sheet in a preheated oven at 350°F (175°C) for 5 minutes. This allows the toffee to set and become crisp atop the crackers.
  5. Add Chocolate Chips: Remove from oven and sprinkle chocolate chips evenly over the hot toffee layer. Wait 2-3 minutes for the chocolate to soften, then spread it evenly into a smooth layer using a spatula.
  6. Cool Completely: Sprinkle sea salt on top if desired. Let the toffee cool at room temperature or refrigerate until the chocolate hardens completely. Break into pieces and serve.

Notes

  • Use fresh saltine crackers for the best crunch and texture.
  • Watch the butter and brown sugar mixture closely to prevent burning.
  • Pour and spread the toffee quickly before it thickens for even coverage.
  • Allow the toffee to cool slightly before adding chocolate chips to prevent burning the chocolate.
  • Cut or break the toffee carefully with a sharp knife after it has completely cooled to avoid crumbly edges.
