Ingredients

Scale

Butter Base

  • 1 cup unsalted butter, softened

Fresh Herbs

  • 2 tbsp parsley, finely chopped
  • 1 tbsp chives, finely chopped
  • 1 tsp thyme leaves
  • 1 tsp rosemary, finely chopped
  • 1 tsp tarragon, finely chopped

Additional Flavorings

  • 1 clove garlic, minced or pressed
  • 1 tsp lemon zest
  • Salt, to taste (start with 1/4 tsp)
  • Freshly ground black pepper, to taste

Instructions

  1. Soften the Butter: Leave unsalted butter out at room temperature until it is soft enough to mix easily but not melted, about 30 minutes.
  2. Prepare the Herbs and Garlic: Finely chop fresh herbs and mince or press garlic to release their full flavors while the butter softens.
  3. Combine Ingredients: In a mixing bowl, blend the softened butter with your chosen herbs, garlic, lemon zest, salt, and pepper until evenly combined and fragrant.
  4. Shape and Chill: Transfer the herb butter mixture onto a piece of parchment paper or plastic wrap. Roll into a tight log, twist the ends, and chill in the refrigerator until firm, at least 1 hour.
  5. Slice and Serve: Once firm, slice the herb butter into rounds or dollops and use immediately or store for later use.

Notes

  • Use softened butter to ensure smooth mixing without lumps and even herb distribution.
  • Fresh herbs provide brighter flavors and vibrant color compared to dried.
  • Start with a small amount of salt and adjust after chilling to avoid over-salting.
  • Add a splash of olive oil if you prefer a softer, more spreadable butter.
  • Herb butter can be made ahead of time; the flavors improve as they meld during chilling.
