Ingredients

Scale

Dough Ingredients

  • 2 cups all-purpose flour
  • 3/4 cup warm water
  • 1 teaspoon active dry yeast
  • 1 teaspoon sugar
  • 1/2 teaspoon salt
  • 1/4 cup plain yogurt
  • 2 tablespoons olive oil or ghee

Garlic Butter Topping

  • 3 cloves fresh garlic, minced finely
  • 3 tablespoons butter, melted (or ghee)

Optional Garnish

  • Fresh cilantro, chopped (optional)

Instructions

  1. Prepare the Dough: In a small bowl, combine warm water, sugar, and active dry yeast. Let sit for 10 minutes until foamy to activate the yeast. In a large mixing bowl, whisk flour and salt together. Add the yeast mixture, yogurt, and olive oil. Mix until a dough forms.
  2. Knead the Dough: Turn the dough onto a floured surface and knead for 8 to 10 minutes until smooth and elastic, developing the gluten needed for fluffy naan.
  3. Allow Dough to Rise: Place the dough in a lightly oiled bowl, cover with a damp cloth, and let rise in a warm spot for 1 to 1.5 hours until doubled in size.
  4. Shape the Naan: Punch down the dough and divide into 6 to 8 equal portions. Roll each portion on a floured surface into an oval or teardrop shape about 1/4 inch thick.
  5. Add Garlic and Cook: Mix minced garlic with melted butter or ghee and generously brush on one side of each naan. Cook on a hot skillet over medium-high heat, garlic side down first, for about 2 minutes until bubbles and brown spots appear. Flip and cook the other side for 1 to 2 minutes.
  6. Final Butter Brush and Serve: Brush the cooked naan with more melted butter and sprinkle with chopped cilantro if desired. Serve immediately warm and soft.

Notes

  • Use warm water to properly activate the yeast for a good rise.
  • Do not over-knead the dough to avoid toughness; knead just until smooth and elastic.
  • Allow the dough plenty of resting time for optimal softness.
  • Preheat skillet well to achieve characteristic charred spots and even cooking.
  • Use fresh garlic minced or grated for best flavor infusion.
  • Brush naan with butter both before and after cooking for layered garlic buttery richness.
