Ingredients

Scale

Potatoes

  • 45 medium russet potatoes, peeled and sliced 1/8 inch thick

Garlic Herb Cream Sauce

  • 3 cloves fresh garlic, minced
  • 2 tablespoons butter
  • 2 cups heavy cream
  • 2 tablespoons fresh thyme, parsley, or chives, chopped

Cheeses

  • 1 1/2 cups sharp cheddar cheese, shredded
  • 3/4 cup grated Parmesan cheese

Seasoning

  • Salt, to taste
  • Black pepper, to taste

Instructions

  1. Prep Your Potatoes: Start by peeling the russet potatoes and slicing them evenly to about 1/8 inch thickness. Uniform slices ensure even cooking and the perfect texture when layered.
  2. Make the Garlic Herb Cream Sauce: Gently sauté the minced fresh garlic in butter over medium heat until fragrant. Stir in the heavy cream and freshly chopped herbs, warming the mixture just enough to infuse the flavors without boiling.
  3. Layer the Potatoes and Cheese: Grease a baking dish. Arrange a layer of potato slices, then pour some cream sauce over them. Sprinkle evenly with sharp cheddar and Parmesan cheese, and season with salt and pepper. Repeat layering until all ingredients are used.
  4. Bake Until Golden and Bubbling: Cover the dish with foil and bake at 350°F (175°C) for about 45 minutes. Remove the foil and bake for an additional 15 minutes to achieve a beautifully browned cheese topping.
  5. Let it Rest: Remove from oven and allow the dish to rest for 5-10 minutes so the layers set, making it easier to serve.

Notes

  • Use a mandoline slicer for uniform potato thickness to ensure even cooking.
  • Fresh herbs greatly enhance the flavor compared to dried.
  • Rest the dish after baking to prevent layers from sliding apart when serving.
  • Cover with foil during initial baking to retain moisture and tenderness.
  • Choose good-quality sharp cheddar and Parmesan for best melting and flavor.
