Ingredients

Scale

Main Ingredients

  • 1 pound fresh button or cremini mushrooms, cleaned and trimmed
  • 3/4 cup all-purpose flour
  • 2 large eggs, beaten
  • 1 cup breadcrumbs or panko
  • 1 teaspoon garlic powder
  • 1 teaspoon paprika
  • 1/2 teaspoon salt
  • 1/4 teaspoon black pepper
  • Vegetable oil for frying (about 2 inches deep in pan)

For Ranch Dip

  • 1/2 cup mayonnaise
  • 1/4 cup sour cream
  • 1/4 cup buttermilk
  • 1/2 teaspoon garlic powder
  • 1/2 teaspoon onion powder
  • 1 teaspoon dried dill
  • 1 teaspoon dried parsley
  • Salt and pepper, to taste

Instructions

  1. Prepare the Mushrooms: Clean mushrooms thoroughly to remove any dirt, then pat dry. Trim stems if necessary to ensure mushrooms are uniform in size for even cooking.
  2. Set Up Your Breading Station: In three shallow bowls, place the flour mixed with salt, pepper, garlic powder, and paprika; beaten eggs; and the breadcrumbs mixed with a little extra seasoning.
  3. Coat the Mushrooms: Dip each mushroom first into the seasoned flour mixture, shaking off excess, then dip into the beaten egg, and finally coat with the breadcrumb mixture, pressing gently for the crumbs to adhere.
  4. Heat the Oil: Pour vegetable oil into a deep skillet or pot to about 2 inches depth. Heat oil to 350°F (175°C), maintaining temperature with a thermometer for ideal crispiness.
  5. Fry the Mushrooms: Fry mushrooms in batches, avoiding overcrowding. Cook until golden brown, about 3 to 4 minutes per batch. Remove using a slotted spoon and drain on paper towels.
  6. Prepare the Ranch Dip: Whisk together mayonnaise, sour cream, buttermilk, garlic powder, onion powder, dill, parsley, salt, and pepper until smooth. Chill before serving.
  7. Serve: Arrange fried mushrooms on a platter alongside a bowl of chilled ranch dip. Garnish with fresh chopped parsley or chives if desired.

Notes

  • Choose firm, fresh mushrooms to keep them from becoming soggy during frying.
  • Maintain oil temperature between 350°F and 375°F for a crispy texture without absorbing excess oil.
  • Do not overcrowd the pan to keep the oil temperature stable and ensure even cooking.
  • Pat mushrooms dry after cleaning to help the coating stick better.
  • Use fresh breadcrumbs or panko for a better golden color and crunch.
