Ingredients

Scale

Main Ingredients

  • 8 ounces dry spaghetti, broken into 2-inch pieces
  • 3 cups marinara sauce, jarred or homemade
  • 1 pound ground beef or ground turkey (optional)
  • 1 ½ cups shredded mozzarella cheese
  • ½ cup grated parmesan cheese
  • 1 teaspoon Italian seasoning
  • 2 cloves garlic, minced
  • 1 ½ cups water or broth

Optional Variations

  • 1 cup chopped mushrooms or cooked lentils (for vegetarian swap)
  • Red pepper flakes or diced jalapeños, to taste (for spice)
  • 1 cup diced bell peppers, zucchini, or spinach (extra veggies)
  • Substitute with gluten-free pasta if needed
  • Cheese variations: mix mozzarella with provolone or sharp cheddar

Instructions

  1. Prepare the Ingredients: Gather all ingredients. Break the dry spaghetti into roughly 2-inch pieces. If using ground meat, lightly brown it in a skillet first to enhance flavor and reduce excess fat.
  2. Layer in the Crockpot: Spread the broken spaghetti evenly in the bottom of the crockpot. Pour the marinara sauce over the pasta. Sprinkle minced garlic and Italian seasoning over the top. Add the cooked ground meat evenly if using.
  3. Add Liquid: Pour in the water or broth to keep the pasta moist and ensure even cooking throughout.
  4. Cook Low and Slow: Cover the crockpot and cook on low heat for 3 to 4 hours. Avoid opening the lid frequently to retain heat and allow pasta to cook evenly.
  5. Add Cheese and Finish: When spaghetti is tender and sauce is bubbling, sprinkle shredded mozzarella and parmesan evenly on top. Cover and cook for an additional 10 to 15 minutes until the cheese melts.

Notes

  • Break spaghetti into smaller pieces to ensure even cooking and good fit in crockpot.
  • Use low heat to prevent pasta from becoming mushy or sticking.
  • Avoid stirring during cooking to maintain layers and develop a slight crust at edges.
  • Add cheese at the end to keep it gooey and prevent rubbery texture.
  • Adjust liquid levels with extra broth or water for a saucier casserole, according to preference.
  • Browning meat first adds flavor but can be skipped for convenience.
