Ingredients

Scale

Dry Ingredients

  • 3 1/2 cups all-purpose flour
  • 2 1/4 teaspoons active dry yeast (1 packet)
  • 1 tablespoon sugar
  • 1 teaspoon salt

Wet Ingredients

  • 1 cup warm milk (about 110°F)
  • 1/4 cup unsalted butter, melted
  • 1 large egg

Instructions

  1. Activate the Yeast: Warm the milk to about 110°F, then stir in the sugar and active dry yeast. Let it sit for 5-10 minutes until frothy to confirm yeast activation.
  2. Mix the Dough: In a large bowl, combine the flour and salt. Add the egg, melted butter, and the activated yeast mixture. Stir until a sticky dough forms.
  3. Knead Until Smooth: Transfer the dough onto a lightly floured surface and knead for 8-10 minutes until it becomes smooth and slightly elastic, developing gluten for fluffy rolls.
  4. First Rise: Place the dough in a greased bowl, cover with a kitchen towel or plastic wrap, and let it rise in a warm spot for about 45 minutes, or until doubled in size.
  5. Shape the Rolls: Gently punch down the dough, divide it into equal portions, then shape each into smooth balls. Place them in a greased baking dish or on a lined baking sheet.
  6. Second Rise: Cover the shaped rolls loosely and let them rise again for 20-30 minutes until puffed and nearly doubled.
  7. Bake the Rolls: Preheat the oven to 375°F. Brush the rolls with melted butter for a golden sheen, then bake for 15-18 minutes until lightly golden.
  8. Final Butter Brush: Immediately after baking, brush the rolls again with melted butter to lock in moisture and enhance flavor.

Notes

  • Ensure milk temperature is warm (110°F), not hot, to avoid killing yeast.
  • Do not over-flour the kneading surface to prevent dense rolls.
  • Use room temperature ingredients for smooth dough and better rise.
  • Cover dough well during rising to prevent drying out.
  • Brush rolls with butter both before and after baking for best texture and flavor.
