Ingredients

Scale

For the Chocolate Cake

  • 1 3/4 cups All-Purpose Flour
  • 3/4 cup Cocoa Powder
  • 1 1/2 teaspoons Baking Soda
  • 1 1/2 teaspoons Baking Powder
  • 2 cups Sugar
  • 2 large Eggs
  • 1 cup Buttermilk
  • 1/2 cup Vegetable Oil
  • 2 teaspoons Vanilla Extract
  • 1 cup Boiling Water

For the Fudge Frosting

  • 1 cup Butter
  • 1 1/2 cups Chocolate Chips or Chopped Chocolate
  • 4 cups Powdered Sugar
  • 1/4 to 1/2 cup Heavy Cream

Instructions

  1. Prepare the Pans and Preheat Oven: Preheat your oven to 350°F (175°C). Grease and flour two 9-inch round cake pans or line them with parchment paper for easy removal, ensuring the cake layers come out clean and intact.
  2. Mix Dry Ingredients: In a large bowl, sift together the all-purpose flour, cocoa powder, baking soda, and baking powder to eliminate lumps and evenly distribute the leavening agents.
  3. Combine Wet Ingredients: In a separate bowl, whisk together the sugar, eggs, vegetable oil, vanilla extract, and buttermilk until smooth and creamy, creating the base for the batter.
  4. Blend Wet and Dry Mixtures: Gradually add the dry ingredients into the wet mixture, stirring gently until just combined to keep the cake light and tender without overmixing.
  5. Add Boiling Water: Slowly pour in the boiling water and mix carefully to intensify the cocoa flavor and thin the batter for a moist, perfectly textured cake.
  6. Bake the Cake: Divide the batter evenly between the prepared pans and bake for 30-35 minutes, or until a toothpick inserted in the center comes out clean. Let the cakes cool in the pans for 10 minutes, then transfer to wire racks to cool completely.
  7. Make the Fudge Frosting: Melt the butter over medium heat in a saucepan. Remove from heat and stir in chocolate chips until smooth. Alternately mix in powdered sugar and heavy cream until the frosting is thick and spreadable. Allow it to cool slightly before use.
  8. Assemble and Frost: Place one cake layer on a serving plate and spread a generous layer of fudge frosting on top. Add the second cake layer, then frost the top and sides with the remaining frosting, smoothing or texturing as desired.

Notes

  • Use room temperature eggs and buttermilk for even mixing.
  • Avoid overmixing to keep the cake light and fluffy.
  • Check oven temperature with a thermometer for accurate baking.
  • Let cakes cool completely before frosting to prevent melting.
  • Select high-quality cocoa powder and chocolate for best flavor.
