Baked Feta Honey and Chili

Baked Feta Honey and Chili is a simple yet flavorful dish combining creamy baked feta cheese with the sweet richness of honey and the warm heat of chili flakes. Perfect as an appetizer, snack, or unique side, this recipe balances sweet, spicy, and creamy notes with minimal preparation and versatile ingredient options.

Ingredients

Scale

Main Ingredients

  • 1 block of good-quality feta cheese (approximately 200g)
  • 2 tablespoons honey (wildflower, clover, or your preferred variety)
  • 1 teaspoon chili flakes (adjust to taste)
  • 2 tablespoons olive oil

Optional Add-ins

  • 1 clove fresh garlic, minced
  • 1 teaspoon fresh lemon juice or 1 teaspoon lemon zest
  • 1 tablespoon fresh herbs (such as thyme or oregano)

Variations and Garnishes

  • Fresh chopped chili or 1/2 teaspoon smoked paprika for extra heat
  • Maple syrup or agave nectar instead of honey
  • Fresh herbs like rosemary, basil, or mint
  • Toasted pine nuts or walnuts for crunch
  • Vegan cheese alternative to substitute feta for a vegan option

Instructions

  1. Preheat the Oven: Start by preheating your oven to 400°F (200°C). This temperature is ideal for baking feta until it’s soft in the middle and slightly golden on top.
  2. Prepare the Feta: Place a whole block of feta in a small baking dish or oven-safe skillet. Drizzle generously with olive oil to keep it moist and help the honey and chili stick later.
  3. Add Honey and Chili: Drizzle honey evenly over the feta, then sprinkle chili flakes based on your preferred spice level. Optionally, scatter the minced garlic and fresh herbs over the top.
  4. Bake Until Bubbling: Place the dish in the oven and bake for about 15-20 minutes, or until the feta is bubbling and golden on top. The heat will slightly caramelize the honey and bring out the chili’s aroma.
  5. Finish and Serve: Once baked, remove from the oven and let it cool for a few minutes. Garnish with lemon zest or a squeeze of fresh lemon juice to brighten the rich flavors before serving.

Notes

  • Use a quality, higher-fat feta for creamier texture and better melting results.
  • Adjust chili flakes gradually to control the spice level.
  • Watch the baking time carefully to avoid drying out the feta; look for bubbling and light browning.
  • Add lemon juice or zest just before serving to cut through the richness.
  • Serve warm for the best texture and flavor experience.
  • Store leftovers in an airtight container with a drizzle of olive oil to keep moist for up to 3 days in the refrigerator.
  • Reheat gently in a low oven or microwave in short bursts to preserve texture.
