Ingredients

Scale

Main Ingredients

  • 2 medium firm, tart apples (e.g., Granny Smith), peeled, cored, and finely diced
  • 2 tablespoons granulated sugar
  • 1 teaspoon ground cinnamon
  • 1 tablespoon butter
  • 1 sheet puff pastry or equivalent crescent roll dough, thawed if frozen
  • 1 egg (for egg wash, beaten)

Optional Extras

  • 1/4 teaspoon ground nutmeg
  • 1/2 teaspoon vanilla extract
  • Caramel sauce for drizzling

Instructions

  1. Prepare the Apple Filling: Peel, core, and finely dice the apples. In a skillet over medium heat, combine the apples with sugar, cinnamon, butter, and optional nutmeg and vanilla extract if desired. Cook, stirring occasionally, until the apples are tender and slightly caramelized, about 5-7 minutes. Remove from heat and let cool slightly.
  2. Roll Out the Dough: On a lightly floured surface, unfold the puff pastry or crescent roll dough. Cut the dough into equal squares approximately 3 to 4 inches wide, suitable for bite-sized bombs.
  3. Fill and Seal: Place a spoonful of the warm apple filling onto each dough square. Optionally add a drizzle of caramel sauce or extra cinnamon. Brush the edges of the dough squares with egg wash, then fold over to form a pocket and firmly seal the edges by pressing with a fork.
  4. Brush with Egg Wash: Lightly brush each sealed pie bomb with the beaten egg to enhance browning and create a shiny, golden crust when cooked.
  5. Air Fry to Perfection: Preheat your air fryer. Arrange the pie bombs in a single layer in the air fryer basket without touching. Cook at 350°F (175°C) for 8 to 10 minutes or until the dough is puffed up and golden brown. Remove and let cool for 5 minutes before serving.

Notes

  • Don’t overfill the dough squares to prevent filling from leaking during cooking.
  • Seal edges tightly with egg wash and fork indentation to keep filling secure.
  • Preheat air fryer for even cooking and crispiness.
  • Space the bombs properly to allow hot air circulation for uniform browning.
  • Allow bombs to cool slightly before eating to avoid burns from hot filling.
